Abraham Lincoln, who led our country during the Civil War, was shot on April 14, 1865, just five days after a main army of the South surrendered at Appomattox. A funeral train brought his body back to Springfield from Washington, D.C. Lincoln’s body rested in two temporary tombs before being moved to the current tomb in 1871. Work on the tomb was not completed until 1874.

The nose on the large bronze Lincoln head at the base of the tomb is kept polished by the thousands of visitors who rub it for good luck.

Lincoln was first buried in this temporary site at the bottom of the hill north of the current tomb.

Lincoln’s body is in a concrete and steel vault just behind the marker and ten feet below the floor.
