The current Statehouse, completed in 1888, took 20 years to construct. It has been estimated to contain 20 million bricks, 750,000 cubic feet of cut stone and 2,400 tons of iron. It houses the Governor’s Office, the House and Senate, and the offices of several other state officials.

In order to support the massive Statehouse dome, the limestone walls of the foundation are 17 feet thick.

Lincoln’s statue stands near Second Street in front of the State Capitol.


This statue of Stephen A. Douglas is near the front steps of the State Capitol.


The statue “Illinois Welcomes the World” stands in the center of the rotunda on the first floor.


The artist spent four years completing this painting, which is 50 feet tall.


The view straight up into the restored rotunda dome shows the original beauty of the work of 19th century artisans.
